The Boston Globe
On Sunday, April 21, 2013, the Boston Globe published a feature article in the business section spotlighting local Boston wine wholesaler Judith F. McDonough, aka “The Wine Lady,” CEO of Mariposa Fine Wines & Spirits. Globe correspondent Cindy Atoji Keene interviewed Judith for the story to provide an insight into the business of one of the few female wine wholesalers in the state.
In the article, Judith discusses several aspects of her business as a wine wholesaler, including the fact that Massachusetts is the fourth-largest consumer of Italian wines in the US. Mariposa’s specialty niche is representing award-winning wines from small vineyards of great value not previously sold in the US.
As a wine wholesaler, Mariposa is licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to sell wine to restaurants, hotels, specialty grocery stores, convenience stores and caterers. Getting a wine wholesaler license is not an easy undertaking: The Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission requires an overwhelming amount of documentation to be filed, as well as background checks, financial statements and regulatory fees.
Judith also describes some of the lighter aspects of the business, including tasting and talking about wine for a living. Learn more about Judith and Mariposa wines by clicking here.
